Looking for tennants accomodation or tennents accommodation? With Google, no problem!

January 7th, 2010

Apparently 10% of all searches made on Google are mistyped or misspelled, so how do those clever people at Google know what we’re searching for even when our spelling or typing goes badly awry?

Google engineer Noam Shazeer developed and implemented a spelling correction (suggestion) system based on what other users have entered. The system automatically checks whether you are using the most common spelling of each word in your query.  Because it is not a dictionary-based spellchecker, the most commonly used spelling of the word could even be the incorrect one.  For example, transexual returns 1210k hits versus correctly-spelled transsexual, returning 853k hits!

Regardless of whether it suggests an alternative spelling, Google returns results which match your query if there are any. If none matches your query, Google may offer an alternative spelling, the ever-helpful ‘Did you mean … ……?’ query correction service, search tips, and a link to Google Answers.  Whether it’s a typo or a misspelling is irrelevant, Google recognizes these and many other words and allows us to access relevant web pages that also often include incorrect spellings (web designers are not perfect!).

According to TextTrust.com, accommodation is number two in the top ten of commonly misspelled words on the web.  Here’s the list:

  1. Tennents bar

    Tennents bar

    Independant

  2. Accomodation
  3. Definately
  4. Recieve
  5. Opportunites
  6. Thier
  7. Occured
  8. Infomation
  9. Offiical
  10. Acitives

For the Scots amongst us, another tricky keyword is tenant.  It must be the influence of that fine institution of the West End of Glasgow, Tennents Bar on Byres road or by the actor, David Tennant, best know for his roles as ‘The Doctor’ in Doctor Who?  Worry not, you can search safe in the knowledge that you are likely to find what you are looking for whether you are a tenant or a landlord.  Any one for a pint?

P.S. Top tip to remember how to spell accommodation?  It’s big enough to accommodate a double ‘c’ and a double ‘m’ ♥

Living and Renting in the West End of Glasgow

November 5th, 2009

The one main advantage of renting good quality accommodation, is that you are able to rent in good quality areas. One area that fits this bill is the West End of Glasgow.

Botanic Gardens, Glasgow's West End

Botanic Gardens, Glasgow's West End

Glasgow’s West End is one of the most lively and busiest areas outside of Glasgow City Centre. It has excellent pubs, restaurants, night clubs and Theatres. The main Street of the West End is Byres Road, that
runs from the Botanic Gardens at Queen Margaret Drive in the North to Partick Cross in the South.

Just off Byres Road is Ashton lane, with its Ashoka and Wee Curry Shop, Indian cuisine, The Ubiquitous Chip for a more authentic traditional fare and a great choice of good old Scottish pubs to go for that pre-theatre drink or the final night cap.

If it’s theatre that you are after, then you have the Oran-Mor or the Cottier theatres. Or if you have tastes for Film, why not visit the re-furbished Grosvenor Cinema in Ashton Lane, which shows not only the latest mainstream film, but always some of the more obscure to surprise and delight.

At the top of Byres road is the Botanic Gardens, these are a marvel to walk through and even on the dreariest of days, a good visit to the refurbished Kibble Palace a magnificent Victorian green-house can brighten up anybodies day.

If the weather does take a turn for the worst, then it can really be time to heighten up the cultural receptors, on our doorstep you have the Hunterian Museum with the Charles Rennie Mackintosh House in the Grounds of Glasgow University, The Art Gallery at Kelvin Grove and the Museum of Transport near the Kelvin Hall.

The West End Festival is the biggest festival in Glasgow. Started in 1996 as a small local festival, it has grown into a major yearly event with a local street parade, music, outdoor theatre and celebrations.

These are just a few of the delights if you rent and live around the West End….. Come live and enjoy.

Tenants Information

It is usually easy to get somewhere to rent.  Anyone at anytime of their life may find themselves in private rented accommodation.  Renting is convenient, flexible and works well for many people.  Before renting it is always better to know your rights as well as your responsibilities and where to go for advise if problems do come up.

With few exceptions, all landlords in Scotland are now required by law to register with their local authority.  This is an attempt to make sure that not only the property, but the landlord is ‘fit and proper’ to be renting accommodation.
